Guiding Principles

The Transgender Health Program's support services are based on the following principles:

  1. The THP promotes self-determination by supporting, respecting, and encouraging transgender community members to make their own informed choices. All transgender community members have the right to request and refuse support from the THP; self-define their own gender identity, gender beliefs, and gender expression; and have personal boundaries respected.

  2. The THP values diversity, including diversity of identity, beliefs and values, culture, language, appearance, ability, family structure, and sexuality. Recognizing and appreciating the diversity within the transgender community, the THP will strive to accommodate transgender community members' needs and preferences in the provision of support services.

  3. The THP provides service to anyone in BC with a transgender health request, with no exclusion on the basis of gender identity/expression, transition status, history of substance use, source of income, mental health history, race, ethnicity, culture, nationality, disability, age, class, appearance, religion, or sexual orientation.

  4. Anyone is welcome to request support from the Transgender Health Program. Priority for support services is given to people who are in an emergency or crisis situation, people who experience multiple barriers to accessing health services (including but not limited to geographic, physical, financial, linguistic, and cultural barriers), and people who cannot coordinate their own care and do not have sufficient assistance from loved ones or professional supports to coordinate care.

  5. The THP is committed to ongoing review of the quality and adequacy of support services provided in relation to the diverse needs of the transgender community. The THP actively solicits feedback from transgender community members in evaluating support services.
