The Transgender Health Program is responsible for developing and implementing a plan to educate health and social service providers about transgender issues. This includes overseeing the development of best practice guidelines, print and electronic education materials, curricula for workshops and continuing medical education seminars, and age-appropriate materials for students in elementary and secondary school.
As part of educating health and social service providers, the Transgender Health Program has to developed evidence-based best practice guidelines to ensure clinical competence in trans-specialty services (endocrinology, surgical and post-surgical care, hair removal, speech therapy, and counseling), as well general health and social services. Guidelines consistent with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health - Standards of Care have been developed for hormone prescription, hormone maintenance, and pre-surgical assessment. The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), formerly known as the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association, Inc. (HBIGDA) is a professional organization devoted to the understanding and treatment of gender identity disorders.
